DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:STEM TOWN USA Judging at the Museum of Natural Science STEM TOWN USA PROGRAM KICKS OFF IN OCTOBER 2010 STEM town USA Pilot Program kicks off in OctoberSTEM Town USA Pilot Program "Kicks Off" in OctoberThe Greater Houston Women's Chamber of Commerce (GHWCC) is pleased to announce our partnership with Houston ISD for the development of STEM Town USA, an initiative to increase exposure of third grade girls interest in math and science through STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) concepts, improve grades and graduation rates, and encourage girls to pursue STEM careers. The program is envisioned as a series of nine monthly after-school sessions with each designed to take approximately two hours. Each month will focus on a different business or aspect of the community along with the science and math that supports it, such as a grocery store, hair salon, bank, utility company, and doctor's office. The students will be allowed to choose from monthly offerings of data analysis, hands-on experiments and design activities. At the end of the school year the students will market their town at the Community Showcase, competing against other schools for the "best place to live" award. Our goal is to engage at least one parent or parent-surrogate for each student in the final session of the year, so a different venue or schedule may be required that month. A maximum of 30 girls will be accommodated at our five pilot schools - Blackshear, Gregory Lincoln, Hartsfield, Peck, and Whidby. To evaluate program effectiveness and support further development, the GHWCC will be requesting teacher evaluations of each student before and after the program as well as student self-evaluation forms. We will also be attempting to track the students for as many years as possible through parent/student follow up. We are very excited to announce the sponsorship of the program to-date by Pate Engineering, Schlumberger, and TPC! Thank you to these foundational sponsors for their support in creating this program. For more information on either sponsorship or volunteer involvement, please contact the Chamber at 713-782-3777 or info@ghwcc.org
